What is a medieval faire?

Medieval faires are themed, immersive events that aim to bring to life the wonder and whimsy of the Medieval period, which lasted from approximately the 5th to the 15th century, overlapping with the Renaissance period.
Being a part of the umbrella of events known as Renaissance faires, a phenomenon originally unique to North America, these are community gatherings of like minded people rooted in the counter-culture movement from the 1960’s.

What sort of activities are happening during the event?

Expect two days of merriment! The event will be hosting a large Medieval Merchants Market, full contact jousting and warhorse rides with the Knights of Valour, birds of prey demonstrations, archery and axe throwing, a costuming contest, food vendors, community exhibitors and demonstrators, live music, a fun and educational Kid’s Corner, and more.

Make sure to keep an eye on our Schedule of Events page leading into October for daily schedules.

Who is running the Thunder Bay Medieval Faire (TBMF)?

The TBMF is an entirely locally owned and operated event, put on by a small but mighty team of Thunder Bay community artists, performers, and passionate event planning professionals! We are partnered with the Knights of Valour, a Canadian jousting troupe, to ensure this event can bring to you, our noble guest, a medieval experience most thrilling!

Our primary goal is to continue the Thunder Bay community’s ability to participate in an event such as this, in the wake of the Thunder Bay Renaissance Faire’s cancelation in 2026.

While some of our team consists of former members and volunteers of the TBRF, who were involved in getting the region’s ren-faire off the ground for the very first time in 2025, we are not affiliated with the TBRF or the OAS (Oliver Agricultural Society), or any other society or group.

Who are the Knights of Valour?

The Knights of Valour is the largest full-contact extreme jousting troupe in the world. And they’re Canadian! Started and captained by Shane Adams, the KOV travels throughout Canada and the US with their team of knights and warhorses, bringing the excitement of medieval tournament to medieval/renaissance fairs throughout the continent.

Do I need to dress up?

You do not need to be in costume to attend, though it is welcomed and encouraged! Many folk will be donning wondrous and fantastical garb, which adds to the immersion and whimsy of the event. You are more than welcome to come in whatever is comfortable for you.

If coming in costume, please keep in mind this event is in October. The weather may turn chilly or windy!

Please note that while there is no official costuming policy, there will be absolutely zero tolerance for clothing, props, or any part of an attendee’s costume bearing hateful symbols, messaging, or ‘dog whistles’.
This is a space that promotes safety, fellowship, comradery, creativity, self expression, inclusion, and community.

All are welcome here.
